Traverse City Wine and Art Festival returns

Traverse City is the place to be in the summer if you're into festivals, whether it's about cherries, food, art, wine or music.

The Traverse City Wine & Art Festival is coming up on June 30, and it combines all of those fantastic Northwest Michigan things in one celebration. Wine and art are backed by a large and diverse slate of musicians and restaurants.

2012 Great Lakes Great Wine Competition results - Wine - The Detroit News

As wine competitions go, most are held in California and are international in flavor. States hold wine competitions for their own wines if the industry is big enough.

So it’s rare when a small community college puts on its own competition, such as the Great Lakes Great Wine Competition by the Orchard Ridge Campus of Oakland Community  College. Their 16th annual competition and evening public event drew many entries for the daytime judging and the biggest crowd yet at night.

The competition is unique because it features only the wines of states and Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes. This year, however, to increase the lineup, other Midwest states were invited to participate.

Riesling Think Piece Nr.2 – O’Keefe for President! | Stuart Pigott's Planet Wine

It’s a little-known fact that there’s not only a United States of America, but also a United States of Riesling occupying exactly the same territory. Nobody knows just how many citizens this other United States has, but figures for the total sales of domestically produced and imported wines made from the Riesling grape indicate that it must be many millions, and that this number has grown substantially during recent years. The fact that coast to coast more than 500 restaurants and 100 retailers will participate in this year’s Summer of Riesling festival compared with 222 last year (back in 2008 it was just Paul Grieco’s wine bar Terroir in New York!) suggests that further significant growth may be just around the corner.

Saturday's Great Lakes Wine Fest at MIS will feature around 50 wineries and breweries | MLive.com

A well-crafted beer or glass of wine always seems to draw attention.

That’s been the case for the Great Lakes Wine Fest at Michigan International Speedway during its short existence. This year’s festival, now in its third year, will be Saturday.

The Great Lakes Wine Fest drew approximately 3,000 people last year.

“People seem to really like it,” said Mindy Bradish-Orta of the Jackson County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which sponsors the event. “Jackson has several wineries and now a brewery, so it’s a natural fit.
